11 April 1814 · Marshal Macdonald

Released from allegiance

Being released from my allegiance by the abdication of the Emperor Napoleon, I declare that I conform to the acts of the Senate and the Provisional Government.

Context

Macdonald was among the last to remain loyal. He waited until Napoleon had signed before sending his submission to the new government. Bourrienne calls it "dignified and simple", and contrasts it with the haste of others.
