Marshal of France, Duke of Taranto

Étienne Macdonald

France 17 November 1765 – 25 September 1840

In 1814: Commander of XI Corps

Macdonald was the son of a Jacobite Scottish exile. In early February he was chased down the Marne by Yorck, and he then came south to Guignes with 12,000 men. In April he was one of the commissioners who negotiated the abdication. Napoleon thanked him for his loyalty with the gift of a sabre he had brought back from Egypt.
