Prince of Benevento

Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord

France 2 February 1754 – 17 May 1838

In 1814: Head of the Provisional Government

Talleyrand had been Napoleon’s foreign minister and later his quiet opponent. He stayed in Paris in March 1814 when the government left, and he welcomed the Tsar into his own house. He guided the Senate to depose the Emperor and smoothed the way for the return of the Bourbons.
