Marshal of France, Duke of Ragusa
Auguste de Marmont
France 20 July 1774 – 22 March 1852
In 1814: Commander of VI Corps
Marmont had been Napoleon’s aide-de-camp at Toulon and in Italy, and was one of his oldest companions. In February his VI Corps led the advance at Champaubert and held the line at Vauchamps.
He defended Paris on 30 March. A few days later his corps marched into the Allied lines, which removed the last of Napoleon’s bargaining power. The French language gained a word from it: raguser, to betray.
