The Grande Armée was destroyed in Russia in 1812 and beaten again at Leipzig in October 1813. Now the Coalition armies have crossed the Rhine. Schwarzenberg’s Army of Bohemia comes through Switzerland and the Langres plateau. Blücher’s Army of Silesia comes through Lorraine.
On 25 January Napoleon leaves Paris for Châlons. He has about 41,000 men on hand, many of them conscripts in their teens, nicknamed the "Marie-Louises".
