Campagne de France, 1814
Ernest Meissonier, 1864
The defining image of the campaign. Napoleon rides ahead of his grim-faced marshals and staff across trampled, half-frozen ground under a leaden sky. Meissonier spent years studying horses and uniforms, and the picture is small but obsessively exact. It hangs in the Musée d’Orsay.
